(Haiphong.gov.vn) - On the afternoon of March 13, Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Tung received on a courtesy call Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Vietnam Bader Abdulla Almatrooshi to learn about the socio-economic situation and investment attraction of Hai Phong city. At the meeting, thanking the UAE Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for taking the time to inspect and work with the city's leaders, Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Tung provided an overview of the socio-economic situation of Hai Phong, which is the 3rd largest city in the country with many advantages for development in transportation and seaports. Hai Phong's GRDP index fluctuates from 10 to 13% each year, always among the top in the country. Currently, the amount of FDI investment in the city has reached 30 billion USD, mainly coming from Japan, Korea and Asian countries. Foreign investors in the city all benefit from preferential policies. Regarding the seaport sector, Hai Phong has put a number of deep-water seaports into operation and is investing in the fieldexport goods. In addition, the city also wants to develop tourism infrastructure, especially in Cat Ba archipelago - a World Natural Heritage recognized by UNESCO along with Ha Long Bay.

Thanking the Chairman of the City People's Committee for the warm welcome, Mr. Bader Abdulla Almatrooshi acknowledged the great progress between Vietnam and the UAE in recent years and looked forward to promoting the relationship between the two countries. The Ambassador commented that Hai Phong is a locality with great potential for future investment and cooperation in the fields of logistics, oil and gas, seaports and tourism. The Ambassador said he would strengthen connections with UAE units on some of the city's projects, especially projects on free trade zones and renewable energy.

In recent times, the friendly relationship and multi-faceted cooperation between Vietnam and the UAE have had many positive developments. The UAE is Vietnam's leading trade partner in the Middle East - Africa region with bilateral turnover in 2023 reaching 4.7 billion USD. As of August 2023, the UAE ranked 45th out of 148 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with a total of 38 projects, total registered capital of more than 71 million USD. In contrast, Vietnam has 05 valid investment projects from the UAE with a total registered capital of more than 1.8 million USD. The two countries are currently negotiating the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
