Maintain the role of a key port
By the end of August 2021, of the total amount of goods passing through ports and wharves in Hai Phong area, the amount of goods passing through Hai Phong seaport continued to increase compared to the same period in 2020 (reaching 15%), of which the highest increase was container goods. Entering September 2021, the amount of goods passing through the port continues to grow, but not higher than previous months. According to Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority, the reason is that the COVID-19 epidemic situation is still complicated, affecting the production and supply chain of goods. In addition, frequent changes in ship schedules and adverse weather conditions also cause difficulties for ports. However, compared to the same year 2020, the amount of goods passing through the seaport is still growing strongly and especially large ships arriving at Hai Phong seaport are increasing.
Playing a key role in the Northern seaport sector, Hai Phong seaport is creating great advantages, pioneering innovation trends in the world shipping industry. A series of service routes are organized by ports in coordination with shipping lines into a closed transport chain from Hai Phong to Europe, America, India and domestic routes in Asia. Among them, Hai Phong Port and Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Port are the leading units in expanding service routes. Big names in shipping in the world choose Hai Phong to cooperate in exploitation such as: Maersk Line, Cosco, OOCL, NYK, Wanhai... Recently, Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company held a ceremony to welcome 3 ships of Maersk Line to Tan Vu branch for cargo handling on the occasion of 30 years. This shipping company operates in the Vietnamese market. Previously, Hai Phong Port also welcomed the container ship AS RAFAELA for the first time on the SHX service route to Tan Vu branch port. It can be seen that through Hai Phong seaport, many large cargo ships connect and bring domestically produced goods abroad; creating added value and increasing competitiveness for Vietnamese goods.
General Director of Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company Nguyen Tuong Anh said that Hai Phong Port always determines to maintain its role as a key seaport in Hai Phong city from which to prioritize investment in production and business development. Along with that, the Port actively builds and expands new maritime service routes to welcome ships and cargo. According to the representative of Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Port, expanding new service routes is the top priority in the unit's production and business development. Currently, maritime service routes operate stably. Representative of Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority said that with an average traffic of about 1,400-1,450 ships entering Hai Phong, Hai Phong seaport is the priority choice for seaports.of domestic and foreign transportation enterprises.

Gradually forming an international transshipment port
Maintaining a stable role as a key port is a necessary step to build and form international transshipment ports. In fact, in recent years, some ports in Hai Phong are gradually becoming international transshipment ports, but only at a low and unstable level. Most international transshipment goods are temporarily imported and re-exported by container through Hai Phong seaport. Although this type of product is abundant, it is not stable from year to year. According to port businesses in Hai Phong, ports must have a stable "cargo base" to develop sustainably, because transshipment goods are goods originating from abroad, only transshipped through the region, then continue to be shipped to a third country...
To build ports (or port clusters) into specialized international transshipment ports, those seaports must meet all the criteria for construction, in which the port cluster of Hai Phong International Gateway Port is the strength to promote this policy. Currently, with 2 launch berths put into use since 2018, Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Port is playing a leading role in receiving ships and container goods from large ships (including mother ships). This port also has service routes to the West and East coasts of the United States. In the fourth quarter of this year, at the Hai Phong International Gateway Port area in Lach Huyen, additional berths 3 and 4 will be deployed, invested by Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company, followed by berths 5 and 6 of Hateco Group. Leave 4 new berthsAfter construction was completed and put into effective operation, the Ministry of Transport approved the construction of an additional route from wharf 3 to wharf 6 to serve the transportation of goods behind the port.
Building an international transshipment port, in addition to focusing on investing in seaport infrastructure, such as: expanding and upgrading maritime channels..., it is necessary to call and encourage businesses with capacity and experience to invest and exploit logistics services according to the city's logistics development planning. At the same time, plan a system of inland ports, warehouses, and satellite ICDs to collect goods, clear customs, and process goods, creating favorable conditions and attracting businesses to bring goods through the port. Large ports will support small ports to build port clusters, including international transshipment ports./.
