(Haiphong.gov.vn) – On the morning of July 8, the City Labor Confederation organized a Conference to propagate Convention 105 on the abolition of forced labor of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Union (EVFTA). Nearly 300 delegates who are full-time union officials throughout the city and a number of affiliated grassroots union officials attended the Conference.

Previously, on June 8, the National Assembly of Vietnam voted unanimously to ratify Convention No. 105. As soon as the accession dossier is completed, Vietnam will officially ratify the convention and this international labor standard will take effect one year later. With this ratification, Vietnam is demonstrating its strong commitment to the fight against forced labor in all forms. This approval is even more important in the context of the ILO's global estimates showing the urgent need to take effective and urgent measures to eliminate forced labor. Furthermore, through the ratification of Convention 105, Vietnam is moving towards achieving decent work andcountries the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.
Preventing and combating the use of forced labor encourages businesses not to commit forced labor acts, contributing to helping businesses' goods when exported to foreign markets, avoid the risks of being banned from import or boycotted by the country importing those goods. Not using forced labor in the production of goods and services is also considered a component of the "passport" of those goods and services when accessing the global market.

New generation free trade agreements, including the agreement between the European Union and Vietnam (EVFTA), require that member states will continue and maintain continuous efforts towards ratifying all of these fundamental conventions to ensure that free trade contributes to the protection of workers' rights and to a more equitable distribution of the economic gains that result from this process.
Also on June 8, 2020, the National Assembly officially approved the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam - European Union (EU) - EVFTA and is expected to take effect from August 1. Together with the Vietnam - EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), the EVFTA Agreement is expected to strongly promote trade and investment between Vietnam and the EU in the next decade as well as open the door for Vietnam to participate more deeply in the global value chain.

Forced labor refers to situations in which people are forced to work through the use of violence or intimidation, or by more sophisticated means such as debt manipulation, withholding of identity documents, or threats of reporting to immigration authorities. Forced labor damages human dignity, denying workers the ability to seek material fulfillment and spiritual development based on free will. |
