Faced with the complicated developments of the epidemic of Lumpy Dermatitis on Cattle and Cattle, on the morning of May 27, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development organized a Conference [...]

At the Hai Phong bridge point, there was the participation and chairmanship of Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Duc Tho; and leaders of relevant departments, branches, units and localities.

According to a report from the Department of Animal Health, the disease Lumpy Dermatitis on buffaloes and cows first appeared in Vietnam in October 2020; As of May 25, 2021, the epidemic has occurred in 2,300 communes of 32 provinces and cities with a total of 66,316 infected cattle and 9,434 dead and destroyed cattle.
The epidemic is currently most severe in the provinces: Ha Tinh (213 communes, 13 districts, the number of infected cattle is 12,480); Nghe An (209 communes, 24 districts, number of infected cattle is 3,919) and Quang Nam (94 communes, 8 districts, number of infected cattle is 4,076).
At the Conference, some localities with high vaccination rates of over 80% said that recently, thanks to vaccination, the epidemic situation in many provinces such as Son La, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh... has been controlled, the number of outbreaks has decreased significantly. However, according to statistics from the Department of Animal Health, vaccination is still quite low. Up to now, only 39 provinces and cities and 28 livestock facilities have vaccinated more than 2 million doses.
According to assessments, the risk of the epidemic of Nodular Dermatitis spreading is very high, but the leaders of some local authorities are not really paying attention or directing drastically and synchronously on disease prevention and control measures. Many localities have not yet monitored and detected the epidemic. There are even places where the epidemic appeared for 1 to 2 months, but the local authorities did not detect it in time and were slow to report to the local Veterinary Department.
Concluding the Conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien requested localities to organize surveillance to detect early, promptly warn and thoroughly handle newly arising outbreaks. Along with that, strengthen management and strictly handle illegal trading of buffaloes, cows and animal products. At the same time, widely propagate and guide livestock facilities to increase the application of measures to prevent and control the disease of Lumpy Dermatitis.
According to Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, the vaccine solution has been showing positive effects in preventing and fighting the epidemic of Lumpy Dermatitis, therefore, localities are requested to urgently have plans to allocate funds to ensure vaccination of at least 80% of the total herd of buffaloes and cows subject to vaccination. In addition, support livestock households to buy pesticides to kill the source of infection, which are blood-sucking insects such as flies, mosquitoes, ticks, gulls, etc.
According to the statistical report of the city's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the city's total herd of cattle is 13,577, equal to 91.47% over the same period in 2020 (of which: herd of cows is 9,485, equal to 91.61% over the same period; herd of buffalo is 4,092, equal to 91.16% over the same period).
Regarding the epidemic of Lumpy Dermatitis, in Hai Phong, the epidemic occurred in 5 households in 5 communes of 4 districts (Tien Lang, Kien Thuy, Cat Hai, Duong Kinh); A total of 8 cows were forced to be destroyed. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Steering Committee for Animal Disease Prevention and Control of districts have implemented anti-epidemic measures according to regulations. As of May 25, 2021, 20 days have passed without detecting sick or dead buffaloes and cows that were forced to be destroyed due to lumpy dermatitis.
