Updated data from the General Department of Customs shows that in April, complete vehicles with 9 seats or less arriving at Hai Phong port area increased sharply, while in Ho Chi Minh City port area, they decreased sharply. Specifically, in April, the country spent more than 310 million USD importing 14,866 complete cars of all types, a decrease of more than 12% compared to the number of cars imported in March (about more than 2,000 cars). Of which, the number of cars with 9 seats or less imported to Hai Phong port was 5,671 (up to 33.4%), and the number of cars imported to Ho Chi Minh City port was 4,551 (down to 29%) compared to the previous month.
There are currently 3 main car import markets for Vietnam, accounting for 94% of imported cars in April, including Thailand (6,427 units), Indonesia (4,027 units) and China (2,685 units). Previously, Thailand and Indonesia were always the two main markets for importing cars into Vietnam. Over the past year, the name China has been mentioned more often in the country's vehicle import data reports. Notably, 2,546 vehicles were the second largest import line, with a turnover of 65.9 million USD, down 46.4% in volume and down more than 44% in turnover compared to the previous month. In particular, trucks imported from Thailand also decreased by 65% compared to last month with 1,223 units; Imports from Indonesia decreased by more than 6% to 465 pcs; but imports from China increased by 20% with 757 units.
The same goes for specialized cars, in April, 1,665 units were imported from China (accounting for more than 84%) out of a total of 1,978 units imported in all markets. Chinese specialized cars are imported to Vietnam through Lang Son border gate.
In addition, imports of complete vehicles with 9 seats or less mainly originate from Thailand with 4,452 units (down 17.3%) and from Indonesia with 4,452 (down 17.3%) and 4,452 units from Indonesia, up 20% over the previous month.
Cumulatively by the end of April, the number of imported CBU cars of all types reached 50,161 units, an increase of 56.5% over the same period last year. In particular, Thailand continues to affirm the number 1 position with 25,732 vehicles, turnover of 474.8 million USD. Next is Indonesia with 13,873 vehicles, turnover of 172.8 million USD; China with 6,633 vehicles, turnover of 247 million USD. Accounting for 46,238 vehicles, the three main markets mentioned above alone account for 92.2% of the country's total imported cars. In particular, the most sudden increase was in the Chinese market when it increased by 480% compared to the same period in 2020 (the same period last year only reached 1,143 vehicles).
