On the afternoon of May 12, in Cat Hai town, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong International Container Terminal Company Limited (HITC) held a groundbreaking ceremony for 2 start-up berths under Component B - Hai Phong International Gateway Port Project. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended and issued an order to start the project.

The International Gateway Port Project - Hai Phong international transshipment port is of special interest to the Government with the expectation that it will create motivation for the take-off of Hai Phong city as well as the Northern economic region.
Attending the groundbreaking ceremony were Mr. Fukada Hiroshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Vietnam; Comrades: Mai Tien Dung, Minister, Head of the Government Office; Nguyen Van Cong, Deputy Minister of Transport; Tran Van Hieu, Deputy Head of the Central Economic Commission and Deputy Minister of Finance; Bui Pham Khanh, Deputy Minister of Construction; along with representatives of leaders of the Ministry of National Defense, the Navy, the Vietnam Coast Guard Command, and the Vietnam Border Guard.
On the city side, there were comrades: Le Van Thanh, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the City People's Committee; Nguyen Thi Nghia, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Head of the Hai Phong National Assembly Delegation; Nguyen Dinh Bich, Vice Chairman in charge of the City People's Council; Le Khac Nam, Standing Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee; Members of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee; Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, along with representatives of leaders of city departments and branches.
With 2 container terminals of 750 m in length, 40 hectares of yards, and a total investment of 321 million USD, when completed and put into operation, Hai Phong International Container Port will be the first deep-water port in the North, receiving container ships and general ships with a tonnage of 100,000 DWT operating on long-distance ocean transport routes. The port not only meets the service requirements for northern import-export customers but is also an important connection point with the international deep-water transshipment port cluster at Cai Mep - Thi Vai, allowing Vietnam's import and export goods to go directly to European and American markets.
The project is also the opening for the future development of the Northern deep-sea port system, and is also one of the symbols of cooperation between the Government of Vietnam and the Government of Japan, as well as the first public-private PPP project supported by Japanese ODA capital.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Comrade Le Van Thanh, Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the City People's Committee emphasized that in recent years, because the output of goods through Hai Phong seaport has always increased, many times higher than forecast, the implementation of component B, the construction of 2 container terminals, is very necessary. When completed and put into operation, the project will be a highlight for Hai Phong's marine economic development process, contributing to perfecting the seaport system, international airport and transportation infrastructure in the region. Hai Phong City commits to creating all conditions for investors to implement the project on schedule, ensuring the highest quality of construction.
Speaking at the Groundbreaking Ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc thanked the Japanese Government for its active support and good-faith cooperation, creating all favorable conditions for the Molnykit Joint Venture to carry out preparatory work to officially start construction today on 2 launch berths of the Hai Phong International Gateway Port Project, contributing to building a sustainable Vietnam-Japan friendship. In order for Hai Phong International Container Port to be completed and put into operation in sync with Component A in 2018, the Prime Minister requested the Investor, along with consultants and contractors, to uphold responsibility, seriously implement commitments in the Contract and the provisions of Vietnamese law, execute construction on schedule, ensure quality and efficiency. The Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Transport and the cityHai Phong City and related agencies create favorable conditions for investors and contractors to carry out construction of ports to ensure safety, security and order, environmental sanitation...
On this occasion, Saigon Newport Corporation donated 500 million VND to the fund "For the poor" in Cat Hai district.
