The first 5 months of the year, including new and increased capital, there were more than 10 billion USD of foreign direct investment capital registered to invest in Vietnam.
Data compiled by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, as of May 20, 2016, the whole country had 907 projects newly granted registration certificates of investment, with a total registered capital of 7.56 billion USD, an increase 155.9% over the same period in 2015.
In addition, there were 425 projects registered to adjust investment capital with a total additional registered capital of 2.59 billion USD, an increase of 93.3% over the same period in 2015.
Thus, in the first 5 months of 2016, the total newly and additionally registered capital is 10.159 billion USD, an increase of 136.4% over the same period in 2015. This is a record increase in recent years, forecasting a bumper year in attracting FDI.
Meanwhile, disbursed FDI capital is also very positive. As of May 20, 2016, it is estimated that foreign direct investment projects have disbursed 5.8 billion USD, an increase of 17.2% over the same period in 2015.
The outstanding growth in registered FDI capital is due to the fact that in recent months, many large-scale projects have been granted investment registration certificates.
The largest is the LG Display Hai Phong Project, with a total registered investment capital of 1.5 billion USD, specializing in manufacturing and processing plastic OLED screen products for mobile devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, tablets...
In addition, in the list of new FDI projects there is also the Project of Vietnamobile Mobile Telecommunications Joint Stock Company, licensed on April 21, 2016, with a total registered investment capital of 1.248 billion USD, invested by Luxembourg investors with the goal of implementing information and communication activities in Hanoi.
Samsung Research and Development Center project, total registered investment capital of 300 million USD, is also a notable project. According to the plan, this project will be developed to carry out research and development activities for Samsung's high-tech electrical, electronic and telecommunications products in Hanoi.
The registered capital is large and the disbursed capital is high, so the FDI sector's contribution to Vietnam's economy and society is also increasing. Statistics show that exports of the foreign investment sector (including crude oil) in the first 5 months of 2016 reached 48.263 billion USD, up 7.7% over the same period in 2015 and accounting for 71.28% of export turnover.
Meanwhile, this region's imports were 39.155 billion USD, equal to 98.1% over the same period in 2015 and accounting for 59% of import turnover.
In general, in the first 5 months of 2016, the foreign investment sector had a trade surplus of 9.108 billion USD.
