Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in promoting renewable energy development in Vietnam with the specific goal of optimal developmentUnderstanding 1,000 MW of wind power by 2025 was just signed by General Electric Group (GE) with the Ministry of Industry and Trade this morning.
The signing ceremony took place under the witness of Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and US President Barack Obama.
It is estimated that this electricity output is enough to supply 1.8 million Vietnamese households.
According to the signed agreement, GE will leverage its global wind power development experience and work with local partners to identify potential projects . Furthermore, this agreement will also support the National Target Program through localizing the production of wind turbine equipment and components at the GE Hai Phong factory and collaborating with other domestic suppliers.
“Renewable energy development is one of the Government's priorities to solve energy challenges to meet the development of Vietnam's economy and society. With a common desire to develop renewable energy infrastructure in Vietnam, through this cooperation, we highly appreciate GE's professional capacity and experience in developing This important wind energy source aims to minimize impacts on the environment and climate change," said Mr. Dang Huy Cuong, General Director of the General Department of Energy, Ministry of Industry and Trade.
For his part, Mr. Pham Hong Son, CEO of GE Vietnam emphasized that with GE's professional capacity in the field of manufacturing and investment in wind energy globally, along with the local experience we have gained from the first wind power projects in Vietnam, GE hopes to continue to receive support from the Government, Ministry of Industry and Trade and will coordinate with Vietnamese partners. to develop renewable energy effectively and sustainably.
Vietnam is a favored country with abundant wind energy resources distributed throughout the country. Geographic diversity and the ability to develop wind power, plus extensive hydroelectric resources across the country, Vietnam will have a great advantage in using wind power at low cost. Taking advantage of wind energy will play an important role in maintaining flexibility and national energy security in the future as energy demand arising from Vietnam's socio-economic development is increasing.
GE is one of the most extensive renewable energy portfolios in the industry, with the world's largest total installed capacity of up to 370GW. GE plays an important role in the development of the Mekong Delta region's first wind power farm in Bac Lieu province. GE has provided 62 wind turbines, with a total capacity of over 99MW of electricity. Phase I of the project was connected to the national grid in June 2013.
In 2009, GE increased investment by establishing a wind turbine components factory in Hai Phong. The factory has created more than 600 jobs for local people and exported thousands of generators and wind turbine components to contribute to global energy solutions.
In Vietnam, GE established its first representative office in Hanoi in 1993 and the next office in Ho Chi Minh City. HCM in 2001. In 2003, GE established GE Vietnam Company Limited, 100% capital of GE, specializing in providing multi-disciplinary after-sales services in the fields of medical equipment, electricity and energy.
