US President Barack Obama called for the early implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), which many countries are in the process of ratifying as part of efforts promotestrategic pivot towards Asia, an initiative seen as a counterweight to the rise of China.
In a speech in Laos on his last trip to Asia as US President (term ending in January 2017), Mr. Obama planned to "give the green light" to TPP, a trade agreement that 12 countries have signed; including Japan but not China.
On September 5, Mr. Obama arrived in Vientiane, becoming the first US head of state to visit Laos.
Here, he attended the ASEAN-US Summit and the East Asia Summit, and had a bilateral meeting with Lao President Bounnhang Vorachit and other key officials of the host country to promote bilateral cooperation in economics, development, people's diplomacy and other fields. Mr. Barack Obama reaffirmed that Washington's engagement with this region will be maintained even after he leaves the White House. Mr. Obama emphasized that America's interests in the Asia-Pacific region reflect the nation's fundamental interests.
Mr. Obama summarized the "pivot" policy to Asia-Pacific, emphasizing that the key priority of his foreign policy as President is to deepen relationships with countries and people in the Asia-Pacific region.
