As of October 20, 2017, the country had 24,397 valid projects with a total registered capital of 312.91 billion USD. Accumulated realized capital of foreign direct investment projects is estimated at 169.05 billion USD, equal to 54% of the total valid registered capital.
Foreign investors have invested in 19/21 industries in the national economic sub-sector system, of which the processing and manufacturing industry accounts for the highest proportion with 184.4 billion USD, accounting for 58.9% of total investment capital, followed by real estate business sectors with 52.4 billion USD (accounting for 16.7% of total investment capital), production and distribution of electricity, gas and water. with 18.1 billion USD (accounting for 5.8% of total investment capital).
As of October 2017, there were 128 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, of which Korea is the leader with a total registered capital of 57.1 billion USD (accounting for 18.2% of total investment capital). Japan ranked second with 46.3 billion USD (accounting for 14.8% of total investment capital), followed by Singapore and Taiwan, British Virgin Island, and Hong Kong respectively.

Imports of the foreign investment sector in the first 10 months of 2017 reached 107.85 billion USD, up 29.2% over the same period in 2016 and accounting for 62.5% of import turnover. Overall, in the first 10 months of 2017, the foreign investment sector had a trade surplus of 17.63 billion USD including crude oil and a trade surplus of 15.24 billion USD excluding crude oil.

Bac Ninh ranked 2nd with a total registered capital of 3.19 billion USD, accounting for 11.3% of total investment capital. Thanh Hoa ranked third with a total registered capital of 3.16 billion USD, accounting for 11.2% of total investment capital.
