(Haiphong.gov.vn) - On the morning of August 6, at the Hai Phong bridge, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Thanh and leaders of a number of departments and units attended the online conference to implement the Vietnam - European Union Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) chaired by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Also attending were Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh, leaders of ministries, central branches and leaders of 63 provinces and cities.

Accordingly, the Vietnam - European Union Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) is a new generation FTA between Vietnam and 28 EU member countries. After 9 years of negotiation and review, on June 30, 2019, EVFTA was signed in Hanoi. After signing, the Agreement will have to go through the internal ratification process in the EU and Vietnam to officially take effect for both sides. The effective agreement will bring great and practical economic benefits to both sides, especially the potential for trade development.
At the Conference, leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the agency coordinating the implementation of the EVFTA Agreement, presented an overview of the Government's EVFTA Agreement Implementation Plan and issues that ministries, branches and localities need to pay attention to to ensure effective implementation of the EVFTA Agreement. At the same time, a number of ministries, branches and localities also presented presentations on the preparation situation for the implementation of the EVFTA Agreement. The conference also heard representatives of associations and businesses express opinions and make recommendations on related issues, directly affecting the effectiveness of implementing the Agreement as well as taking advantage of opportunities for businesses to effectively implement the EVFTA Agreement.

In his opening speech at the Conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized: The Agreement takes effect from August 1, 2020 like a western highway, connecting Vietnam with a market space of more than 450 million people and with world-leading potential. EVFTA is a free trade agreement with the widest range of commitments and the highest level of commitment, with 99.2% of tariff lines being eliminated by the European Union (EU) for Vietnamese export goods. EVFTA will help Vietnamese businesses have many opportunities to compete on price when exporting goods to the European market. The Agreement opens up opportunities for our country to promote its growth model. The Prime Minister requested delegates attending the Conference to give their opinions and propose solutionsfor Vietnam to proactively implement the Agreement to take better advantage of opportunities.

Speaking at the Conference, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Thanh affirmed that the competitiveness of the city and businesses in the area has been improved, gradually participating in the global value chain and domestic production chain. The IIP industrial development index increased by an average of 22.17%/year; Total retail sales of goods and service revenue increased by an average of 14.3%/year; The output of goods through the port increased by an average of 17.55%/year; The average export turnover increased by 34.99%/year, in 2020 it is estimated to reach 18.92 billion USD... With its position as a port city, a major industrial and service center of the country, and the largest maritime traffic hub in the North, the EVFTA Agreement has opened up great opportunities for the goods of Hai Phong businesses to penetrate the large EU market.
To prepare for the implementation of the Agreement, Hai Phong city will increase propaganda and dissemination of the EVFTA Agreement; ensure that the law-making work implements a consultation mechanism and collects opinions from relevant subjects; improve competitiveness and develop human resources; Trade unions innovate awareness and thinking, perform well on labor relations issues, accompany businesses in taking care of the welfare and interests of workers; Develop and promulgate synchronous social policies.
