On the morning of March 22, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ministry of Industry and Trade officially announced the Vietnam Import-Export Report 2017, an annual publication to provide an overall picture of import-export activities in the past year.
Speaking at the Announcement Ceremony with the participation of numerous representatives of ministries, branches, localities, associations, organizations, businesses and reporters, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh emphasized the highlights of Vietnam's import and export activities in 2017. For the first time, Vietnam's exports exceeded the 200 billion USD mark. For the whole year, the country's exports reached 214.02 billion USD, an increase of 21.2% compared to 2016, far exceeding the target assigned by the National Assembly and the Government to the Industry and Trade sector.

In parallel with the positive growth rate, the structure of exported goods in 2017 continued to shift in a positive direction, ensuring the orientation set out in the Goods Import-Export Strategy for the period 2011-2020, with an orientation to 2030. Accordingly, the group of processed industrial goods with a proportion of over 81%, accounting for the highest proportion in the structure of exported goods, followed by the group of agricultural and aquatic products accounting for 12% and the mineral fuel group accounts for about 2%.
The trade balance in 2017 reached a surplus of 2.92 billion USD, the highest surplus ever, and the growth rate of imports was lower than the growth rate of exports. In particular, Vietnam has a trade surplus mainly with developed countries that have strict requirements for imported goods such as the United States, EU, and Oceania.
At the Announcement Ceremony, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department, Vice Chairman of the Report Editorial Board gave a presentation summarizing the Report's content as well as the main features of import-export activities in 2017 by each product group, market as well as the work of the Industry and Trade sector in managing, regulating and promoting foreign trade activities...
The report is structured in 6 chapters, focusing on main contents including:
i. Overview of Vietnam's export and import situation.
ii. Export situation of products.
iii. Situation of imported goods.
iv. Export and import markets.
v. Import-export policies and mechanisms.
vi. Situation of negotiations and signing of trade agreements and MOUs related to trade in goods in 2017.
According to the assessment of associations and businesses at the announcement ceremony, in general, the 2017 Import-Export Report has provided objective panoramic information, helping businesses have directional information to serve their production and business plans. At the same time, we also suggest adding some information that import-export businesses need.
Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Khanh highly appreciated the efforts of the Editorial Council and the Editorial Secretariat, with the core of the Import-Export Department and the Industry and Trade Newspaper, coordinating with units under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, agencies, departments and branches in preparing and releasing publications quickly and effectively with relatively comprehensive content, reasonable and scientific structure.

Vietnam Import-Export Report is a publication issued annually by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to provide an updated, reliable, systematic and transparent source of information on the results achieved in import-export activities by each product group, market as well as the work of the Industry and Trade sector in managing, regulating and promoting foreign trade activities... Through two releases, the Report is considered a tool to support the planning of policy mechanisms of state management agencies; is an effective reference channel for building business strategies, orienting production, improving the competitiveness of export enterprises, and providing necessary information to help businesses minimize risks in the process.production and business activities, especially in the context of deep international economic integration.
